The narrator has a strong dislike for Kelada and appears to have firstly formulated his opinion based solely on the fact that he is forced to share a berth with Kelada. Taken from his Collected Short Stories collection the story is narrated in the first person by an unnamed male and from the beginning of the story it becomes clear to the reader that Maugham may be exploring the theme of contempt. His first play, A Man of Honour, was followed by a series of successes just before and after World War I, and his career in the theatre did not end until 1933 with Sheppey. Thomas' Hospital with a view to practising medicine, but the success of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897, won him over to letters. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and at Heidelberg University.
